How Do I Develop Learning Materials for Facilitated Lessons?

In facilitated lessons, an instructor leads students through a series of activities to help the student gain a skill or to acquire more knowledge. Facilitated lessons are usually standardized, which means the content, the teaching aids and the methods of delivery of information occur in a routine way across different classrooms and with different instructors. Unlike independent study where a student works alone on a project, facilitated lessons usually happen in groups. These lessons require an instructor with a level of expertise in the skill set or subject matter.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm ideas and write down the main skills and knowledge you want delivered to learners. Make a list of ideas and activities that will foster this learning.

    • 2

Develop lesson plan templates. Create a form with objectives, goals, activities, homework and other subheadings. Use this form to write lesson plans.

    • 3

Create handouts and other materials. Format worksheets, rubrics, article packets and reading lists to complete each lesson and the overall curriculum.

    • 4

Create assessments. Design test, quizzes, progress reports and other materials for students. If several facilitator will deliver the same content, create classroom observation sheets to evaluate these instructors. Use these assessments to understand how, and how well, students are learning.

    • 5

Create a delivery model. Practice this model lesson and then host sessions to delivery this lesson to facilitators. This will provide an experience-based example of your method to your facilitators.

    • 6

Review and revise. After several sessions with your lessons, evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum using the assessment tools you create. Revise the curriculum accordingly.
