Christian Photography Schools

Christian colleges and universities across the country offer degree programs in which you can major or minor in photography. Other schools also provide informal photography courses and seminars among their course offerings. Some of them articulate the priority of teaching students how to use photography skills in Christian mission work at home or abroad.

    • George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon has over 90 different majors and minors including an art major with concentration in photography as well as painting and printmaking, ceramics, and digital art. The liberal-arts curriculum allows students to gain a well-rounded education and a broad understanding of the world at large, while the faith-based classes are taught from a Christian world view.

    Eastern Mennonite University

    • The photography major at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia is administered through the Visual and Communications Arts Department, which states that "the EMU photo major unfolds in the context of our Christian liberal arts community, a multicultural, peace-oriented environment that values effective cross-cultural communication and passionate engagement with the world." Among the core courses offered in the photography major are Foundations of Design, Visual Communication Theory, Graphic Design, and Digital Photography.

    University of the Nations

    • The University of the Nations in North Kona, Hawaii is a non-accredited university with associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs. Its School of Photography offers small class sizes and training in black-and-white and color digital photography with digital single lens reflex cameras. According to the university, the School of Photography is geared toward students who are planning to use photography to honor Christian principles in business or through mission work. The goal of the school is to teach students how to reflect Christ's values in the choosing of photographic subjects and techniques.

    Institute of Photographic Studies

    • The Institute of Photographic Studies conducts photography training workshops in various locales depending on the needs of the group. According to the Institute, the instructors are Christians "passionate" about teaching other Christians how to interpret God's works through creative media outlets. Instruction is provided in portrait photography, prizewinning photography, photojournalism, lighting, and design training. Workshops may last anywhere from one day to several weeks or several months. Students are not required to enroll in a degree program or attend additional courses.
