How to Stop Cheating on Tests

Stopping students from cheating on tests can be mentally trying and stressful. When you realize that students are cheating, you likely feel disappointed and hurt by such deceitful behavior. Rampant cheating reflects negatively not only on a school's reputation but negatively on the professional qualifications of the teacher. It is imperative that you deter cheating and stop it from occurring during the test. With some preparation and the proper attitude, you can stop your students from cheating on tests.

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss with your students the importance of honesty and academic integrity. Use positive reinforcement to fortify these principles.

    • 2

Announce to your students that talking is not allowed during the test.

    • 3

Assign students their seat during the test. Do not allow students to sit near their study partners or friends.

    • 4

Monitor your students closely during the examination. The less time that you pay attention to your students, the greater the chance that a student will successfully cheat.

    • 5

Confront suspicious behavior immediately but discreetly. If your student is visibly copying from another student's test, confiscate the test and his materials. Write down the student's name for disciplinary referral.
