Present the Carnegie stages to your class using visual representation on an overhead projector or on a Smart Board. Explain each stage thoroughly, explaining which physical feature is developed at each stage.
Have the students sequence the development of the embryos on their own by labeling each stage, one through 23, on a printout of the images from each stage. Have them label the number of the stage and the features of the embryo during that stage.
Provide the students with clay so they can make models of the embryos at each stage. This allows students to learn visually and tactically.
Review the stages with your students using a PowerPoint presentation or a slide show compiling images for each stage.
Assess what they have learned by testing them on the 23 stages. Give them unlabeled embryos and have them again label the stage number and the physical development of each stage.
