How to Make My Campus Smoke Free

Making your college smoke-free is a way to make the campus a healthier place for all who attend it. Though the task may seem monumental, with the right degree of support, influence and a good campaign, you can work toward successfully making your campus smoke-free. By building a campaign, gaining support from people of influence and educating the public at your campus about the hazards of smoking, while offering smokers a way out of their destructive habits, you can create positive, healthy change on your campus.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize a group of advocates. It is hard to create change through one person, whereas a group of people seeking change garners far more influence. Assemble five or more individuals who are like-minded and aggressive in seeking a smoke-free campus.

    • 2

Advocate policy change. Establishing a new policy and what it should entail will become the backbone of your campaign against smoking on campus. Look into any existing policies held by the campus and even the state regarding smoking in public and work toward creating what you wish to be the new, smoke-free policy.

    • 3

Educate the campus. Aim to garner support from your fellow students by educating them about the dangers and effects of not just smoking but second-hand smoke as well. Get concrete facts, statistics and evidence about the dangers of smoking as a means of supporting your desire for a smoke-free campus, and hand them out to the campus. Investigate your campus's policies regarding the distribution and posting of literature prior to handing out or posting fliers.

    • 4

Support the smokers on your campus. Instead of viewing those who smoke as the enemies, seek to educate them about their dangerous habit and offer them assistance in quitting smoking. Work with your student health center leaders to implement some type of program where smokers can go to receive help in quitting their addictive habit.

    • 5

Create a petition. Make a petition detailing what exactly you want to see happen on campus and why. Instead of using this as a manipulative power tactic, use it as a means of showing the officials on your campus just how many students want a smoke-free campus. Get as many signatures as possible from students and even faculty members, yet only if their jobs permit them to sign such a petition.

    • 6

Persuade those with influence. Set up meetings with those who have the power to speak out and implement policy change at your campus, such as the dean of students and other heads of the institution. Present your case professionally, not argumentatively, using the power of persuasion to your advantage. State you case clearly and ask for their support.
