How to Make a Portfolio as a Freshman

A college art program can include different genres of art, from film to sculpture and design. When applying to such a program, it is generally required to present a portfolio of your work along with other application materials. Along with a statement of purpose, your previous grades and the references you offer, your portfolio will give the reviewer a sense of whether you will be a good fit for the program.

Instructions

    • 1

Request an application package and review the application process. With regard to your portfolio, determine the institution's guidelines as to what type of work is required and acceptable. Also try to get hints on what types of submissions offer you the best chance for acceptance.

    • 2

Determine the manner in which you must present your portfolio. For example, some colleges and universities require that you upload your portfolio and send it via the department's website, while others prefer a printed version. It is advisable to never send original pieces but rather, copies of these works.

    • 3

Review your body of work to select pieces you believe best demonstrate your abilities and unique vision as an artist. Many colleges prefer an array of original works that help to showcase your talents in different areas, such as various schools of art, rather than works you set out to create specifically for that program.
