How to Use a Question Mark in APA Format

APA (American Psychological Association) format is commonly used in scientific, technical and collegiate writing. The APA does not have many rules regarding question marks, but they do have a few you'll need to abide by if you want your question marks to be properly formatted for APA style. The APA rules on question marks are not difficult or complex, and they are simple to learn.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a question mark only after a sentence that asks a question. For example, you would place a question mark after the following sentence: "Would you like a chocolate?" However, you would not place a question mark after the following sentence: "I would like a chocolate, please."

    • 2

Include the question mark inside the quotation marks only if the question mark is part of the quoted material. Otherwise, the question mark rests outside of the quotation marks. For example, in the following sentence, the question mark would go inside the quotation marks: "She asked, 'May I have a chocolate?'''

    • 3

Leave one space between the quotation mark and the next letter in the following word, rather than two, or no spaces at all.
