How to Cite a Quote of a Person in an MLA Work

The importance of providing a citation comes down to giving credit to someone for their work or ideas. Whether your writing a research paper or doing any kind of academic work, citing a person with MLA (Modern Language Association) work can be done. The MLA citation format is based on inserting key information into parentheses using a style order. Citing a quote of a person with a MLA work can be achieved within a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce the quote with a fragment of a sentence that leads into the quote. Be sure to keep any question marks, periods or any exclamation points before the closing quotation mark; for example: "The schoolhouse made the visitors feel as if they were in a 'room full of animals ready to attack.'"

    • 2

Place the name of the person you are citing into parentheses. If you are citing a person's quote from a work of literature, add the author's last-name and then the page number. Place the parenthesized author's last name and page number before the punctuation of the quote. Be sure to separate the last name and page number with a comma.

For example "The schoolhouse made the visitors feel as if they were in a "room full of animals ready to attack" ( Author Name, 17).

Take notice to the period no longer being before the quotation marks. Instead it is now after the parenthetical citation. (Reference 1)

If you are citing a quote directly from a person, just add their last-name in parenthesis at the end of the quotation.

For example : "The schoolhouse made the visitors feel as if they were in a "room full of animals ready to attack" ( Last Name).
