MLA Citation Instructions

The Modern Language Association, or MLA, is an organization that sets guidelines that are used in formatting papers and manuscripts in English. MLA formatting is most commonly used in academic settings, and more specifically for papers in Humanities. Perhaps the most important part of MLA format is citation style. Citations are important for providing readers with a reference to source material and for avoiding plagiarism. MLA prescribes a specific citation format for different media, including books, journal articles and websites.

Instructions

  1. Works Cited Page

    • 1

Compose a works cited page. This reference should be located at the end of the paper.

    • 2

Write "Works Cited" at the top. List all of your sources in the correct MLA Format.

    • 3

Format a book citation, starting with the last name of the author, then first name. Include the name of the book in italics. The medium of publication, such as if the book was in print or accessed digitally, is listed last. For example, compose a book citation like this:

Smith, Jane. Persons Unknown. New York: Random House, 2011. Print.

    • 4

Compose a website citation. If there is an editor or author of the website, this needs to be listed first; if not, the site name should be the first piece of information. Include the site name, version number, name of the publisher (such as an educational institution) and the date of creation. For example, format a website citation like this:

Jane Smith. Unknown Persons Found. Version number. University of the United States, 12 September 2009. Web. 23 January 2011.

    • 5

Use the correct format for any citation used; the format will vary depending on what media you have used as a reference. Arrange your references on the works cited page in alphabetical order.

    In Text Citations

    • 6

Cite sources within the text. Different kinds of quotations or references will need different formats.

    • 7

Use this form at the end of a quote: (Author Last name, Page numbers).

    • 8

Use this form if you have included the author's name in the text to introduce the quote: (Page numbers).

    • 9

Format short quotations normally within the paragraph but use quotation marks " " to open and close the quotation.

    • 10

Format a quotation that is longer than three lines by starting a new line and indenting the whole quotation one inch from the left margin. No quotation marks are needed for this kind of block quote, but the citation should go at the end after the final punctuation.
