Community Colleges In and Near Akron, Ohio

Community colleges in the U.S. -- sometimes referred to as vocational colleges or technical schools -- are founded to serve the communities in which they're located. Akron, one of the largest cities in Ohio, has a number of such institutions. Community colleges in and around Akron typically have diploma, certificate and associate's degree programs designed to give people specific technical job skills.
  1. Akron Institute of Herzing University

    • The Akron Institute of Herzing University is the name of Herzing University's Akron, Ohio campus. As of January 2011, the school offers 24 certificate, associate's and bachelor's degrees. Subject areas include criminal justice, dental assisting, laboratory technology, healthcare management, payroll accounting and network security.

    Summit College

    • Summit College operates as a two-year institutional arm of the University of Akron, which is the largest institution of higher learning in the city. The community college offers more than 40 programs at the certificate, associate's and bachelor's levels. Some associate programs, such as electronic engineering technology and mechanical engineering technology, have bachelor's equivalents. This means that associate's degree candidates, if they wish to, can take a certain amount of additional credits to get a bachelor's degree.

    Ohio College of Massotherapy

    • Located in a township that's about a 15-minute drive away from Akron, the Ohio College of Massotherapy focuses on training students to become massage therapists. People can choose between the 46.5-credit Level One diploma or the slightly more extensive 69.5-credit associate of applied science degree. Classes at the OCM include neuromuscular therapy, Myofascial release massage and spa lab.

    Wayne College

    • Like Summit College, Wayne College is a two-year institutional offshot of the University of Akron, with a lineup of certificate, associate's and bachelor's degree programs. Unlike Summit, however, associate's degree candidates at Wayne wishing to get a bachelor's degree will need to graduate and transfer to another institution instead of taking additional credits. Wayne's degree specializations include application software, social services technology, medical transcription, and e-marketing and advertising.
