Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) prides itself on being one of only a few educational institutions in the United States to provide its students with an independent architectural history undergraduate degree program. In addition to SCAD, the University of Virginia's Architectural History Department is in its dedicated School of Architecture. Schools of Art and Architecture usually offer individual courses in the history and theory of architecture.
Columbia University offers a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Architectural History and Theory. Harvard University and Brown University feature a department of History of Art and Architecture, and SCAD confers a Master of Arts (M.A.) and Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from its Department of Architectural History. The University of Virginia also awards graduate degrees in this field. Many additional majors within art, architecture and archaeology departments can be found in graduate schools across the nation.
You may also earn a degree in architectural history from programs at the University of Texas at Austin, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the State University of New York at Binghamton, the University of Washington, and Yale University. Other schools offer general degrees in art, archaeology and architecture, so it is relatively rare to earn a degree that shows a B.A., M.A., M.F.A., or PhD specifically in architectural history.
Studying the history and theory of architecture through centuries past is a valuable way to gain insight on the development of societies and cultures around the world. Scholars of art and social sciences benefit from the archaeological studies conducted by their academic peers, because ancient residential and business buildings, landscapes, and houses of worship can reveal a wealth of knowledge about modern civilizations and how they came into existence.
