The City University of New York (CUNY) has a Doctor of Music Arts Program for Performance, which is for students who play percussion instruments, flute, piano, oboe and clarinet, and also for voice performers. You receive individual instruction in this program, along with performance evaluation and opportunities for practice, especially chamber music performances. In this program you can also take classes in music theory, music history and ethnomusicology.

The master of music coursework includes conducting, composition, performance, theory and pedagogy. You can specialize in either conducting or performance and performance/pedagogy. The doctoral program is for composers and performers. Coursework includes performance, choral music, composition, conducting and performance/pedagogy. You can concentrate in your particular instrument or in voice performance.
The Manhattan School of Music offers master's and doctoral programs. The master's is a 52-credit program, and the doctoral program is a 60-credit program. You can specialize in different areas, including jazz and classical performance. Master's coursework includes music history, woodwind lab, applied flute and chamber music. You must also attend concerts and give a recital. Graduate coursework includes history, pedagogy, research methods, theory and applied flute. You must write a thesis, pass written exams and perform a solo recital.
The Temple University Graduate School offers a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance for the flute, which must be completed within seven years. You can take this program on either a full-time or part-time basis. This is a 55-credit course. Coursework includes pedagogy, music education, chamber music, advanced conducting and performance practice. You can also take electives in music history. You must give a final recital and pass written and oral exams.
