Culinary Art Colleges in Alabama

The state of Alabama has many options for post-secondary education, including universities, colleges and institutes that provide certificate programs. If you wish to pursue a culinary arts education in Alabama, there are numerous options to consider.
  1. Culinard

    • The Culinard chain of culinary arts schools has locations in Alabama, Florida and Virginia. Its two Alabama locations are in Birmingham and Mobile. The culinary arts diploma program lasts 36 weeks and gives students hands-on experience in food preparation and the food service industry. There is also a separate pastry arts program. Students are taught by accomplished culinary professionals and get an opportunity to work with many of Alabama's top chefs during internships. Upon graduation from Culinard, students will have advanced skills in culinary arts, a knowledge of cooking techniques and an understanding of the industry.

    University of North Alabama

    • In 2007, the University of North Alabama became the first school in the state to offer a four-year course in culinary arts. The program is taught in a converted elementary school on the university's campus and accepted just 24 students in its first year of operation. The program's students routinely cater events for the university and have held open houses to demonstrate their skills in the kitchen. The four-year program educates students about every element of culinary arts, including how to succeed in the restaurant business. The university is located in Florence.

    Trenholm State Technical College

    • Trenholm State Technical College was honored in 2008 by the American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission as having one of the country's 22 exemplary culinary arts programs. Students have come from 30 states and 18 different countries to be instructed in cooking, the restaurant industry and opening their own businesses. Certificate or associate degree programs are offered. Students can prepare for careers as executive chefs, culinary instructors, food critics or food and beverage directors. Trenholm State Technical College is located in Montgomery.

    Shelton State Community College

    • The culinary arts program at Shelton State Community College is a two-year program that awards students with an associate's degree. Upon graduation, students are ready for careers in the food service industry as chefs or sous-chefs. Students are taught everything from making a five-course meal to purchasing food, nutrition and kitchen safety. The majority of Shelton State Community College culinary arts classes are hands-on, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand what is taught. Students have the option of taking a partial course load and can earn credits over time. Shelton State Community College is located in Tuscaloosa.
