A degree in music technology can open doors to a variety of careers in the music industry. As technology continues to advance at an exponential rate, the use of computers, digital technique, multimedia applications and web-related technologies has become essential in the scoring, producing and recording fields. A degree in music technology can prepare students to work in recording studios, digital audio production, record production companies or even as performers.
  1. New York University

    • New York University's Steinhardt School of Education, Culture and Human Development offers undergraduate and graduate programs in music technology through its Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. Degrees include a bachelor, master or doctorate of music in music technology. The school has 10 recording and computer music studios, research laboratories and listening rooms. Students can participate in the school's internship program, which offers hands-on experience at recording studios, new-media companies and music-scoring companies. Coursework includes audio-visual production, post-production, mastering, game audio, scoring and software.

    Oberlin College and Conservatory

    • Oberlin College and Conservatory, located in Oberlin, Ohio, offers a major in Technology in Music and Related Arts. Admission requires musical proficiency and a portfolio of original works using technology. Coursework includes music theory, aural skills, performance technology, analog and digital circuit design, studio recording and workshop in solar music. Junior-year students present their work publically through a 30-minute recital, performance, lecture or demonstration. Seniors must present a recital of original pieces, a performance using technology or a thesis.

    Foothill College

    • Foothill College, located in Los Altos Hills, California, offers an associate's degree in music technology and a certificate in Pro Tools and music technology. Students can attend classes online or on campus. Coursework includes topics such as digital audio production, digital video, songwriting and recording arts. Classrooms feature individual workstations with the latest in music technology and software. The associate degree requires 47.5 credits and generally takes two years to complete. Certificates require completion of 35.5 credits and take about a year and a half.

    Bloomfield College

    • Located in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Bloomfield College's music technology program offers coursework in subjects such as digital media studio, music improvisation, digital audio engineering, basic sequencing, MIDI programming and music industry essentials. Students choose a concentration in digital audio engineering or the technical side of recording, or record production and artist development, which focuses on the creative aspects of music production. Coursework combines instruction with hands-on computer experience. Applicants must submit a portfolio of their best work.

    Virginia Tech

    • Virginia Tech, located in Blacksburg, Virginia, offers an undergraduate degree in music technology. The program provides instruction and training in theory, acoustics, recording, mixed-media technologies. Prospective students must audition and, once accepted to the program, must continue to take applied instrumental classes. Choose between 50- and 78-credit hour programs. Students gain hands-on experience in the school's digital audio recording and production studio and digital interactive sound and intermedia studio.
