Southern Illinois Junior Colleges

Perhaps you're graduating from high school and pondering your next step. Or maybe you've been out of school for a while and would like an introduction back into collegiate life. Or, maybe the appeal of staying close to home in southern Illinois is your predominant factor in choosing a place to continue your education. Whatever the case, there are several junior college options in southern Illinois, each offering a unique academic and extracurricular experience.
  1. Shawnee Community College

    • Shawnee Community College offers more than 100 two-year associate's degrees and certificate programs for its more than 2,000 students. The school, which is located near Ullin in southern Illinois, was founded in 1967. At Shawnee, students can learn trades such as massage therapy, nursing, cosmetology and more. The school also offers several student organizations, such as music, art and car clubs. This junior college also has as athletic department, the mascot for which is the Saints. Basketball, golf, baseball, volleyball and softball teams are fielded by Shawnee students.

    Rend Lake College

    • Located on the shore of southern Illinois' Rend Lake, Rend Lake College was founded in 1955 as Mt. Vernon Community College. On-campus facilities include a science center, a student center, a technology center, a truck-driver training center, two greenhouses and athletic facilities that provide a home to the Warriors, the school's sports teams. More than 4,500 students are enrolled in programs such as education, English, information systems, mathematics and grape growing.

    John A. Logan College

    • John A. Logan College, based in Carterville, has more than 7,000 students. Those students study a variety of subjects, ranging from geography to psychology to astronomy. The junior college also offers athletic programs such as volleyball, baseball, basketball and golf. Facilities at the Carterville campus include several academic buildings and a health complex that includes an aquatic center and weight room.

    Southeastern Illinois College

    • Southeast Illinois College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010. This junior college, located near Harrisburg, has more than 2,500 students. Students at SIC can take associate's programs in applied science, arts and sciences and liberal studies. In addition to its athletic programs, which include softball, basketball and baseball, Southeastern Illinois College also offers a competitive shooting squad and a nationally recognized forensics program for students interested in public speaking.

    Frontier Community College

    • Illinois Eastern Community College has several campuses in the state, one of which, Frontier Community College, is located in the southern Illinois city of Fairfield. This location was established in 1974. The campus and its educational offerings has expanded, and it now has an enrollment of about 2,300 students. Courses offer tracks for associate's degrees or certification in fields such as automotive technology, information systems, nursing assistance, graphic arts and corrections.
