Belhaven University is a Christian liberal arts college located in Jackson, Mississippi. According to Belhaven's website, it is the only Christian college in the United States that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in creative writing. This degree program is based on a biblical worldview, and structured according to the premise that artistic endeavors like writing can and should express absolute religious truths. Belhaven publishes a fine arts journal, Brogue, to which creative writing students are encouraged to submit their work.
The Institute of Writing Studies at St. John's University, a Catholic university in Queens, New York, offers undergraduate and graduate level courses in creative writing and composition. Although the university has a first-year writing program focused on the art of composition, the majority of writing courses are integrated into the English curriculum and approached from an interdisciplinary perspective. In addition to the undergraduate program in English, St. John's also offers Master of Arts and Doctor of Arts degrees in English. Many of these graduate students are affiliated with the Institute for Writing Studies.
Boston College, a Catholic-affiliated university, offers an undergraduate creative writing program through the Department of English. This program, which students must pursue in tandem with an English major, requires the completion of three writing workshops in one or more genres chosen by the student. It also requires attendance at a monthly social event focused on a campus literary activity. Students must declare a creative writing concentration by the first semester of their junior year.
Perelandra is an accredited online Christian college offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in writing. The Bachelor of Arts in writing requires 120 credits, 30 of which must be taken from Perelandra. The Master of Arts in creative writing requires 36 credits, and prepares students for professional writing and teaching careers. As of 2010, tuition is $200 per credit.
The Christian Writers Guild, located in Colorado Springs, offers six transferable undergraduate courses in writing through partnership with Taylor University Online. Areas of study include English, article writing, fiction writing, nonfiction writing and scriptwriting. These courses typically count toward an Associate of Arts degree, though, depending on the student's home institution, they may also contribute to an undergraduate independent study degree.
