Someone who is interested in working in this field must obtain a four-year degree in food science.
  1. Food Scientist

    • Food science students take a number of science classes, including chemistry, biology, nutrition, microbiology and biochemistry in addition to math, pre-med and engineering courses.

    Career

    • After obtaining a degree in food science, graduates are qualified for a long list of positions, including food scientist, flavor chemist, laboratory director, food toxicologist, meat scientist, quality assurance officer, packaging specialist, FDA/USDA research scientist and plant manager. According to the food science department at the University of Idaho, average salaries for graduates with that degree start around $40,000 per year.
