Edinboro's Department of English and Theatre Arts offers a bachelor of arts degree in English, with a concentration in writing. Students enrolled in this degree program must take two courses in basic writing, followed by four intermediate courses in such fields as screenwriting, playwriting and poetry. Two advanced writing courses are required, as well as a thesis seminar in writing.
Prospective writers with a media-oriented focus can earn a bachelor of arts in journalism and mass communication with a focus in print journalism. This major requires students to take a core curriculum of basic journalism courses and four requirements for the print specialization: advanced reporting, feature writing, editorial page and electronic layout. One journalism elective in such courses as magazine writing or sports writing also is required.
To earn a bachelor of arts degree in journalism with a public relations focus, students enrolled in Edinboro University's program must take the same core courses as a print journalism major. However, the four required specialization courses all center on public relations writing, design and management. One public relations elective is also required, with students able to choose from such courses as writing for advertising.
The university strongly recommends that its English writing majors take a minimum of two additional courses in journalism or another writing subject, along with at least two upper-level literature courses. Print journalism and public relations majors have the option of obtaining an internship relevant to their majors. Though not a degree program, a minor in creative writing is also available at Edinboro University upon completion of the appropriate prerequisites.
