Dayton, Ohio: The Four-Year Colleges

Within the city limits of Dayton, Ohio, there are two four-year universities: Wright State University and the University of Dayton. Within 20 miles of Dayton, there are five four-year colleges and universities, according to Collegeboard.com; however, two of these universities have specialties differing from the standard college. For students who attend colleges in and around Dayton, there are many things to do. Dayton hosts three golf courses, many restaurants, the Dayton Art Institute and bars like the Trolley Stop and Dublin Pub.
  1. Wright State University

    • With more than 100 undergraduate degrees, Wright State University is a four-year college where students can complete undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. programs. Situated on 557 wooded acres, 19,793 students attend the university, which competes in the NCAA Division I and sports the colors hunter green and gold. The full-time tuition rate for Ohio residents, excluding room and board for the 2010-11 year was $7,797. Nonresidents paid $15,105. Unlike many universities, there are no housing requirements for freshman students. Residents are required to have at least a 2.0 GPA and an 840 in critical reading and math on the SAT for admission, while nonresidents are required to have a 2.5 and 960, respectively. Students may choose majors such as motion picture production, Greek, sign language interpreter, psychology, economics, criminal justice and many more.

    University of Dayton

    • The University of Dayton ranked in five of the top-20 lists published by the 2011 edition of "The Princeton Review," including eighth in "happiest students." Originally a boarding school for boys, it opened in 1850 hosting a total of 14 students. The University of Dayton now has 70 four-year undergraduate programs, and various graduate and doctoral programs. It also offers a law degree. At the university, hall and roommates are usually classmates, paired by major and interest. The university owns many single-family homes with front porches, where students study, play and have classes together. The Marinest-Catholic priests, brothers and sisters employed by the university try to maximize the students' living and learning experience.     Antioch University Midwest

    • Formerly Antioch University McGregor, Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs, Ohio, is approximately half an hour's drive from Dayton, according to Google Maps. The campus has 4,000 students, and the amount of time it takes to complete a four-year degree depends on the number of credits being transferred and the number of credits taken each semester. Students may receive credits for work experience at the discretion of a faculty member or expert in the field.

      The university is for adult students and emphasizes critical thinking, collaborative learning and the integration of life, work and academics. Majors at the university include early childhood eduction with Ohio teaching licence, liberal arts, health and wellness, humanities, creative writing, human services administration, management, and sustainability. For graduation 180 credits are required. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

    Kettering College of Medical Arts

    • Approximately 15 minutes from Dayton, Kettering College of Medical Arts is located in Kettering, and devoted specifically to medical programs. Owned by the Kettering Medical Center, Kettering College of Medical Arts opened in 1967, three years after the hospital. Students may obtain the following four-year degrees: human biology (pre-med), diagnostic medical sonography, nursing, physician assistant, radiologic sciences: advanced imaging and respiratory care. To apply to Kettering College, applicants must submit the application and fee, a personal statement, high school transcripts, and meet math core requirements by taking math placement tests.
