Stanford University School of Education (SUSE) has a cross-disciplinary approach. It offers undergraduate degrees as well as master's and doctoral degrees. The undergraduate program offers an honors and minor program for social studies students who wish to supplement their field with courses and research in education. SUSE provides some students with the opportunity to follow independent work. Students at SUSE engage directly with practice and work with educators on and off campus.
The Teachers College at Columbia University offers graduate degrees to students who have majored in different areas, including social sciences. The oldest and largest graduate school of education, it has a program in social studies education, which combines history and social sciences for purposes of instruction and to prepare students for professional positions. This program states it as a principle not only to build knowledge, but also to "bring together some of the nation's leading experts" in the field.
Harvard Graduate School of Education, founded in 1920, has a program in teacher education where students of social studies can be educated and placed in urban public schools. This program offers scholarships to financially support candidates who will dedicate themselves to teaching math or sciences for a minimum of two years in the Boston Public Schools or a similar high-need school district. The teacher education program states it believes good teaching depends on deep subject-matter knowledge, pedagogical expertise, knowledge of adolescents and practical understanding of organization change in schools.
The Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California offers graduate study in urban education for students of social studies. The school is very diverse, with students from 50 states and more than 100 countries. Social studies students can earn a master of arts in teaching and education here. The school also offers non-degree programs for K-12 teacher education. The school is also home to an affiliated Language Academy with a residential intensive English-language program taught by the USC campus.
