How to Transfer the SEVIS to a University in the USA

The Students and Exchange Visitor System (SEVIS) is an automated system that the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses to gather and maintain information regarding the current status of international students, exchange visitors, and their dependants. International students must register with SEVIS prior to entering the country. Once you are in the U.S. you have to abide by certain rules to maintain your legal status. If you are enrolled in a university and would like to study in a different institution, you must ask your International Student Advisor to transfer your SEVIS. This will allow you to keep your SEVIS identification number for the duration of your stay in the U.S.

Obtain the SEVIS Transfer Form. You can get this Transfer Form by visiting the office of International Students Services at your current university. Complete the section pertaining to you and let the International Students Advisor fill out the rest. Make sure you request a copy of the Transfer Form for your records.

Provide your International Students Advisor with an admission letter from the new institution you will be transferring to. Note that if you are an F-1 student, you must transfer your SEVIS records to the new university within 60 days of completing your degree or ending your Optional Practical Training (OPT). Additionally, if you would like to transfer before finishing your degree and your I-20 is still valid, you will have to speak to your International Student Advisor, to determine if your school's policy allows the transfer. Moreover, if you are a J-1 student you must transfer your SEVIS records to the new university within 30 days of the completion of your degree.

Sign the first page of your I-20/DS-2019 once you receive it. After your current International Students Advisor releases your SEVIS records to the new university, it will issue a new I-20/DS-2019. Note that you must start taking classes at your new institution within five months of the completion of your degree.

Take all your legal documents to your new university. Those documents include your signed I-20/DS-2019 as well as all your previous I-20s, your I-94 card, and your passport. Transferring your SEVIS is different from transferring your academic records, so make sure you transfer your academic records as well.

Register for the required number of classes. To maintain your legal status as an international student, ICE requires you be enrolled full-time. At this stage, the International Students Services office will officially complete your SEVIS transfer.
