The City University of New York (CUNY) offers two degree programs through its School of Technology and Design's Advertising Design and Graphic Arts Department: a four-year bachelor of technology (BTech) in communication design and a two-year associate in applied science (AAS) in art and advertising design.
In the bachelor's program, students can specialize in graphic design, advertising design or web design and may elect to take courses in packaging design, typography, desktop publishing design, digital video, 2-D and 3-D animation, multimedia, photography, speech, business management and advertising production management.
Students in the AAS program may elect to take courses in office systems, estimating, imaging, page assembly, prepress, presswork, binding and finishing, quality control and customer service.
The University of Cincinnati School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) offers a bachelor of science (BS) degree in design. The program focuses on teaching students how to use drawn imagery, typography, symbology, photography, composition, production, motion design and digital technology.
Beginning in 2012, the graphic design and digital design programs will merge into a new degree program, graphic communication design. As part of the five-year program, students will participate in an 18-month internship in the design field.
Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylania, offers a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree in communication design. The four-year program is designed to lay a foundation of design knowledge in the freshman and sophomore years and then allows students to focus on specialized courses in graphic design, advertising design, illustration and interactive design in the junior and senior years.
During their senior year, students may opt to take half-semester workshops in such topics as digital animation, campus graphics, package design, restaurant graphics, poster design, greeting card and gift industry design, computer illustration, motion graphics and 3-D animation. Graphic design majors are also eligible to take internships in their senior year to gain experience beyond the classroom.
The University of Tampa in Florida offers a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree in graphic design. Students in the program learn the traditional elements of studio art along with creative uses of computer technology and the latest professional software. The program aims to develop students' visualization skills, creativity, drawing potential and design ability.
Topics of study include graphic design, photography, computer graphics, art history, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and printmaking.
