A zoology school is the best place to get a zoology degree. Although you can find zoology degrees offered at online universities or by correspondence, it is important to get your degree at a bricks-and-mortar school because you'll get to work, hands-on, with zookeepers and animals. Choose a school near a large zoo, such as the University of Minnesota and the University of San Diego. Or, attend a school, in a major city, that has a zoology program and is affiliated with a zoo or other animal habitat. That way, you can be sure you will actually work with animals.
While you are getting your degree, you will need to take a variety of classes. Classes include those in animal anatomy, behavior and veterinary tech training. You will also take classes in how to house and care for animals, in building animal habitats, and in the business side of working with animals and with a zoo. The degree can take anywhere from four to eight years, depending on whether you want to get a bachelor's degree, a master's degree or a doctoral degree.
Most zoology degrees require you to get an internship to fulfill your degree responsibilities. Sometimes, you will intern as part of your educational career, and sometimes you will do it at the end of your degree program. Your degree program will instruct you as to how to do your internship, but the purpose of it is to make sure you have an experience working in a zoo setting before your career begins.
There are several careers that you can pursue with a zoology degree. The most common ones are zoo careers -- you can be a zookeeper or work at a particular zoo in an animal habitat. You can also work with animal conservation, or animal habitats, or even in animal research facilities.
