American University in Washington, D.C. is a Methodist-affiliated university opened by John Fletcher Hurst, a Methodist bishop, in 1914. It offers a number of graduate programs that fall under peace studies. There are two main master's programs: International Peace and Conflict Resolution; and Ethics, Peace and Global Affairs. These programs are both offered in the school of International Service. There are also three dual-degree programs that link the master's in peace and conflict resolution with either a master's in teaching, business administration or theological studies. Both a bachelor's and doctorate degree can also be pursued in international relations with a concentration in international peace and conflict resolution. Finally, there is a 15-credit graduate certificate in peacebuilding, which has concentrations in conflict resolution, conflict and development and human rights.
Chapman University, located in Orange, California, has been affiliated with the Christian Church and the Disciples of Christ since it opened in 1861. In the university's Wilkinson College of Humanities & Social Sciences is the Department of Peace Studies. This department offers a bachelor's degree in peace studies. A core requirement of five courses includes such classes as introduction to peace studies and nonviolent social change. Elective courses in the major include multicultural ethics, human rights law and social change. The department also offers an undergraduate minor in peace studies. Students in the major are encouraged to participate in a study abroad or internship program. They are also offered the chance to join a model United Nations.
Manchester College, in North Manchester, Indiana, is one of six colleges associated with the Church of the Brethren, a Christian denomination. Since 1948, it has offered a bachelor's degree in peace studies. Courses offered within this major include the literature of nonviolence, current issues in peace & justice, peace issues and conflict resolution. Students must choose a concentration within the major. Formal concentrations include interpersonal and intergroup conflict studies; religious and philosophical bases; and international and global studies. With the help of an advisor, students can also form their own individualized concentration. A minor in peace studies is also available.
St. Thomas University, with locations in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, is associated with the Catholic Church. It offers an undergraduate major and minor in justice and peace studies. The major's core courses include active nonviolence, conflict resolution and theologies of justice & peace. Also required with the major is an immersion program that can be satisfied by performing an internship program in or out of the department, with approval of the program director.
