Science Fair Ideas for College Students

Science fair ideas for college students should go beyond the elementary project of exploding volcanoes. College science fairs are competitive and coming up with a unique idea is hard. It is best to start thinking about ideas early so you are not scrambling looking for that last-minute project. Explore past projects to get inspiration; past projects can inspire you to come up a totally new idea or you can take that past project idea and build on it, creating a totally new project.
  1. Genetic Engineering

    • Create a science project based on how plants are altered through genetic engineering. Include the differences between today's genetic engineering projects from past genetic engineering projects in your presentation. Topics that go beyond high school include demonstrating how safe or unsafe the newly genetic plants are by researching the effects of animals that feed on the genetically altered plant versus non-genetically altered plants. Present any differences in growth and health in your presentation.

    Alternative Fuel/Power

    • Create a science project that uses alternative fuel for vehicles to demonstrate engines running efficiently or even better than with traditional fuels. Alternative fuel for vehicles is fuel other than petroleum such as ethanol, methanol, natural gas, electricity, hydrogen and biodiesel.

    Winglets in Wind Tunnels

    • Create a science project that explores changes in an airplane airfoil. The airfoils on a plane create lift as the plane moves by creating low pressure on top of the wing and high pressure below the wing. It is the high pressure below the wing that allows the plane to lift off the ground and fly.

    Helio Tracker

    • Create a science project that imitates a sunflower's ability to follow the sun. The efficiency of solar panel is increased with the ability to follow the sun. Currently this is available with sophisticated technology but a low-tech technology is needed in rural areas.

    Archimedes Pump

    • Create a science project that expands on the Archimedes pump. Archimedes created a displacement pump that collects water and then moves it by rotation. The water is collected in a cylinder type container in a chamber with blades. When the blades are turned it moves the water to the next chamber. The blades are tightly fitted to the chamber wall to prevent the water from flowing back. This procedure of rotating the blades continues until the water reaches the top.
