Ideas for a Majors Fair

A majors fair provides college students with the opportunity to meet representatives from different majors at their university. Students who are undecided about their major or career goals can ask questions and learn more about the majors their university offers. Planning a majors fair requires team work and months of planning.
  1. Plan Ahead

    • Begin planning for your majors fair early, preferably a year in advance, recommends the journal The Mentor. Do not attempt to plan a majors fair on your own; instead, create a committee of faculty members, academic advisors and students to help plan the event. Begin putting together a budget and requesting information and help from university officials. Let members of your university know your intentions so that they can begin to put together literature to hand out at the event. Begin talking to potential volunteers who can help plan the event, or volunteer their time during the fair.

    Location and Time

    • Choosing the right location for your majors fair is crucial. Find an area of campus that students frequently visit or pass throughout their school day, recommends The Mentor. The school cafeteria, a room in the library or outside a main administrative building are all choices that may work for you. Many students commute to campus, and only visit on certain days or certain times of the day. Choose a day and time that many students are on campus. Try to hold the fair for an entire day so that students who only attend morning or evening classes will not miss out.

    Advertise

    • Begin advertising your event early. Let teachers, academic advisors and university officials know about the event so that they can share the information with students.Create flyers to post around campus.Use social networking to let people know about your event. Send emails directly to student. Create an event website to include time and location, contact information and the majors that will be featured during the event, and links to each department website. Include information for how students should prepare for the event, with advice for questions to ask.

    During The Event

    • When setting up the event, create a clear flow of traffic, and use signage to direct students to majors they are interested in. Use balloons and signs to draw in students. Have refreshments like soft drinks, coffee, punch, cookies or candy on hand to hand out to students and volunteers. If possible, give each student a bag when they arrive to hold brochures they collect during the event.
