Sports Agent Degrees

Sports agents are a vital link in the chain that makes up the various sports industries. A sports agent represents individual athletes and groups of athletes in securing contracts, negotiating endorsement deals and dealing with legal issues. There are different areas in which education is particularly important or useful for an aspiring sports agent. The National Association of Sport Management lists more than 300 universities, as of 2011, offering sport management programs in the United States.
  1. Sports Management

    • The sports management undergraduate degree was created specifically for the sports management field. It functions like an omnibus degree, requiring coursework in fields such as accounting, management, economics, law and ethics, much like other business degrees.

    Fitness Management

    • A degree in fitness and wellness can be especially suited to navigating the unique challenges and particulars of an athlete's career. Predictably, an agent with this training is expected to be more hands-on and accommodating of a client's needs. However, this undergraduate degree is best paired with a business or law degree in order to fulfill the role of agent, which necessarily includes a great deal of navigating in corporate negotiations.

    Marketing

    • A great deal of a sports agent's skills comes in the form of salesmanship. Understanding trends, identifying opportunities and identifying a client's marketable traits and strengths are key skills for a marketing major. A huge component of representing athletes is assessing their value and articulating it to those who are in a position to compensate the athletes. An undergraduate degree in marketing provides the necessary skills for a potential sports agent.

    Business

    • An undergraduate business degree or a master's degree are the most generic degrees for this field. Understanding general business concepts, however, is a very sound, albeit conservative, stance to take in preparation for something as specific as a career representing athletes. This degree should be paired with something more focused on athletics, or you should pursue a concentration within the major.
