Veterinary Medical Schools and Colleges

Veterinarians treat disease and injury in animals. Most practicing veterinarians care for pets, such as dogs, cats and other small animals, while a small percentage treats horses exclusively. To become a veterinarian, you must earn a doctor of veterinary medicine (D.V.M.) degree from an accredited veterinary school and obtain a state license. Admission to veterinary school is extremely competitive. A number of accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. offer degrees in veterinary medicine.
  1. Cornell University

    • Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York, is one of only three veterinary schools in the Northeast. Approximately 335 students are enrolled in the four-year, post-baccalaureate program, and 110 students enrolled in the master of science and doctor of philosophy programs. The college is known as a leader in animal medicine and veterinary medical education. In 2007 "U.S. News & World Report" ranked Cornell as the best veterinary program in the country.

    Purdue University

    • Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine, located in West LaFayette, Indiana, is the veterinary college in the state. The school graduated its first class in 1963 and has since produced approximately 2,000 veterinarians. In addition to the doctor of veterinary medicine degree, the school also offers associate and bachelor's degrees in veterinary technology. Graduate and post-graduate programs are also offered. The school offers special services to the general community, including the PetSafe program, which provides short-term care for pets during times of family crisis and the Peace of Mind Program, which assists pet owners with will provisions for their companion animals.

    University of California-Davis

    • The U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine boasts the largest veterinarian hospital residency program in the U.S. and is the only state university in California to offer the D.V.M. degree. In addition to the four-year doctor of veterinary medicine degree, the school offers a master of preventive veterinary medicine, a D.V.M/Ph.D. dual degree for veterinary scientists, as well as a master of public health, offered in conjunction with the U.C. Davis School of Medicine. In 2007, "U.S. News & World Report" ranked this program as the second best veterinary program in the country.

    Tufts University

    • Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1978, is located approximately one hour west of Boston, in North Grafton, Massachusetts. The school offers a four-year D.V.M. degree and five graduate programs, including three dual-degree programs. The Cummings School has three teaching hospitals; the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, the Hospital for Large Animals and the Tufts Wildlife Clinic. Faculty members have contributed in the fight against avian influenza and other zoonotic diseases (i.e., diseases transmissible from animals to humans).
