Community college faculty is responsible for all aspects of student learning including ensuring that students are prepared to meet the demands of a particular discipline by creating course material that provides effective and thorough instruction. To consistently provide effective teaching, faculty must stay knowledgeable in their chosen fields of study. This requires faculty to retain current information about any advances or new technologies introduced into their discipline and pass it on to their students. Faculty should also provide career counseling to students that need guidance and serve as a liaison between students and college administration.
Because educating students is the most important aspect of college life, faculty indirectly fulfills the responsibilities to a college by consistently fulfilling their responsibilities to students. In addition, it is important for faculty to contribute to the improvement of a college's operations. This is done by playing an active role in governing and decision-making processes by attending faculty meetings, serving on established committees and pursuing administrative roles.
While preparing students for integration into society and prospective careers, faculty also fulfills part of its responsibility to the college's surrounding community. Faculty can complete other community responsibilities by staying involved in community activities, such as volunteering and representing the college at various community events, as well as teaching students the importance of community involvement. In this way, the faculty becomes positive representation for the college, improving the college's reputation and stature within the community.
In addition to responsibilities to the college, students and the community, faculty should also be dedicated to accurately representing all aspects of their chosen disciplines. This is important because it shows a faculty member's knowledge of and passion for his discipline. It also improves a faculty member's credibility with students and other staff. Responsibilities to the profession include continuously learning all there is to know about a field of study, participating in professional organizations and teaching associations and maintaining all required certifications for a discipline.
