How to Connect a Rectangular Tube Steel When Welding

When welding, outside of ensuring that your weld has the appropriate strength and the necessary aesthetic qualities, you need to make sure that you weld your metal in the exact location that you wish to have it. Clamps will help you keep your rectangular tubes in place while welding. As well, making tack welds around the weld -- ie, 1/4-inch welds 3 inches apart from each other -- will help you to connect your rectangular tubing more permanently, and avoid warping when you make your continuous weld bead.

Instructions

    • 1

Align your rectangular tubes in the exact position in which you plan to weld them and clamp them in that position.

    • 2

Create small "tack" welds with your welder, where you plan to weld. Tack welds should be small and evenly spaced. Tack welds hold your tubes in place when you are producing your continuous weld bead, avoiding warping. Allow your tack welds to cool for several minutes.

    • 3

Produce a continuous weld bead that connects all of your tack welds. Move as quickly as possible when producing your continuous bead. Move your entire body, not just your hand, to keep the angle at which you are welding constant.
