How to Slow Down the Production of ATP

ATP or Adenosine Tri-Phosphate is a source of energy used by cells. ATP is made of adenosine, which is a molecule that contains carbon, and phosphates. ATP is made within every cell by an organelle called the mitochondria. Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of a cell. Without mitochondria, a cell would die because it would not have energy to survive. Mitochondria use chemical reactions to make ATP. Every chemical reaction is directly dependent on temperature. The higher the temperature, the faster the molecules move, the faster a chemical reaction will take place. By decreasing the temperature at which a reaction takes place, you will decrease the rate of formation of products.

Instructions

      Transfer the cells you are working with to a sterile container. Using your sterile spreader, evenly distribute the cells along the bottom of the container to assure proper temperature distribution.

      Seal the container with the lid. By using a sterile container, you will prevent contaminating bacteria from altering the metabolism of your cells and prevent mold from growing.

      A refrigerator can be used as a cooler.

      Place the sterile container of cells into your 4 degree centigrade cooler. Allow the cells to remain in the cooler for up to 3 months. During this time, the metabolism and thus, ATP production of the cells, will be reduced.
