Bulletin Board Ideas for Resident Assistants

Resident assistants, also known as RAs, are supervisors of residence halls or group homes. The vast majority of RAs work at university dorms, and are usually themselves students who have taken this position to help pay for their education. An important part of the RA's job is to keep the residents informed of important matters, and one way to do this is with a bulletin board.
  1. Visitor Policy

    • Many colleges and universities have visitor hours during which residents can have family of friends visit them in their dorm rooms. Depending on the level of security at the school, the visitor may have to get a pass. Any such policies, as well as the closing hours for visits, should be posted on the bulletin board, along with the other requirements for visitors, such as those regarding noise or other disruptive behavior.

    Rides

    • Most students choose to (or are required to) leave the campus during their break. Those who do not have cars or other means of transportation may want to catch a ride with another student who happens to be heading their way. The RAs can help facilitate this process by posting a ride signup sheet on the bulletin board. This sheet would be in two parts: students seeking rides and students offering rides.

    Emergency Information

    • Another very important item that the RA should post on the bulletin board is emergency information. This includes numbers for the campus police, the local emergency medical responders, campus maintenance, the national poison control center, the local suicide prevention agency and the campus counseling services. In addition, the RA should include a number where he can be contacted. Also post building evacuation instructions.

    Illegal Activities

    • Post a complete list of the types of activities or actions that are illegal in the dorms. This might include drug possession, theft, violent crime and sexual assault. Alongside these should be listed the criminal and academic penalties that will be enforced should a student be found guilty of one of these crimes.
