Make sure that your institute meets all the eligibility requirements. Your school may not be outside of the U.S. or be only partially accredited -- for example, some programs are accredited, but the institute itself is not.
Go to educause.edu and click on the link "Administer your .edu domain." You will be routed to a new page that covers the requirements for obtaining and maintaining an .edu domain.
Click "Request a new domain." When the page has loaded, scroll down until you find ".edu Name Availability Look Up."
Enter in your desired domain name. This name must in some way reflect the name of your institution and may not be generic.
Click "Request this Domain" If the domain name is available. Otherwise, try a new name in the search engine.
Search for your institute by name and location, or accreditation agency, to verify your eligibility.
Choose a secure password made of at least eight numbers and letters.
Enter in or verify the address of your institute.
Provide an administrative contact who will be responsible for maintaining all the administrative details on your domain.
Repeat step 9 with the information for a technical and billing contact.
Provide a Primary and Secondary name server. Use Domain Name Servers (DNS) that can store information and also provide answers to queries. You can provide your own or contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and set up a DNS through them.
