How to Spell out Dates in MLA

The Modern Language Association is an organization that sets guidelines for the proper formatting of papers. MLA is one of several common citation and formatting styles. It is commonly used in liberal arts disciplines such as history and English. According to MLA style, dates should be listed in a day-month-year format, and the names of most months must be abbreviated in a specific way.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin with the day of the month. Simply list the number. For example:

      14

    • 2

List the name of the month. For example:

      Feb.

In MLA format, use three letter abbreviations for the names of most months. The exceptions are May, June and July, which are not abbreviated, and September, which is abbreviated as "Sept."

    • 3

Finish with the year. Use the full, four-digit year. For example:

      2011

The entire date should appear as follows:

      14 Feb. 2011
