Format your paper like a memo. Single-space text within paragraphs but double-space between paragraphs. Use 1-inch margins throughout. Unlike a typical paper, do not indent paragraphs; left justify them. Place the word "Memo" or "Memorandum" at the top of the page in a large, bold font.
Identify the audience for your memo-style paper. Memos include an introductory section that identifies yourself, the writer, in the "To" section and your audience, which could be your professor or your classmates, in the "From" section. Thus, establishing an audience allows you to complete this introductory section and focus your content so that it considers the audience's needs and knowledge level.
Establish a subject for your paper. Rather than including a title at the top of the page, place your paper title in the "Subject" section of the memo in the introductory material. Keep your title brief -- use as few words as possible while giving readers a good sense of the paper's content.
Include the date in the introductory section. This date should reflect the date you plan to submit the memo, not the date you are writing it -- unless they are the same.
State the purpose of your paper in the first paragraph. This paragraph should be similar to an introductory paragraph of a typical paper. Introduce your topic broadly and establish your argument. Include a thesis statement at the end of this paragraph. This is the statement you will prove throughout the rest of the paper.
Compose paragraphs that support the purpose outlined in your introductory paragraph. Draft topic sentences to start each paragraph that directly support the thesis. Content in each paragraph should relate directly to the topic sentence and, more broadly, support the thesis. Avoid adding any extraneous information, as memo-style papers should be clear and concise.
