Take a practice CLEP test. CLEP study guides, which can be found at bookstores, often contain practice exams that you can take and score. Collegeboard.com offers free downloadable resources such as the CLEP Sampler. Take the practice test in a comfortable setting, but try to mimic the testing environment as much as possible.
Score the practice test. Count the number of correct answers. Because the exam is computerized, points are not deducted for incorrect or unanswered questions. Award yourself one point for each correct answer. This is your formula score.
Convert your formula score to a scaled score. The scaled score ranges from 20 to 80. Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions to find the proportion of correct answers.
The number of multiple-choice questions you answered correctly is combined with the scores of any essays that were part of the exam. Collegeboard.com states that essays are graded by the institutions that require them, which means that your multiple-choice score is sent with your essays for the final scaled score. On most exams, the American Council on Education recommends that a score of about 50 percent is equivalent to a grade of C and is considered passing.
