What Are the Files Needed for an APA Format of a PowerPoint?

One popular way to make an academic presentation is in PowerPoint, and many class assignments require it. PowerPoint is easy to use and allows for a certain amount of creativity. It also provides the opportunity for visual representations of analysis based on graphs, charts or other information. Making an academic PowerPoint presentation will necessitate some kind of referencing format, such as APA style. The type of files you need will depend on the nature of your presentation.
  1. Journals

    • Academic presentations inevitably require referencing academic journals. Part of a PowerPoint presentation should always be a reference page. When writing in APA format, you must follow the guidelines for formatting a reference page. Be prepared to cite your references on the reference page and elsewhere in the presentation with in-text citations. If you are citing online journal sources, you will need direct links to those files for your reference page and in-text citations. All you need to do is copy and paste the link into your PowerPoint document.

    Books

    • If you are citing research from a book, you won't necessarily need files from an online link, unless you found the source online. If not, just type the reference in the reference page according to APA format, or appropriately cite in-text. If you found your source online, you'll need the direct link. As with journal articles, copy and paste the link according to APA guidelines for both in-text and reference-page citations.

    Photos

    • Some PowerPoint presentations are more effective with visual aids, such as photos. Photos can be used to add a touch of creativity to your presentation, and to give an audience greater understanding of your research project. If you are going to use photos, you will need the files for those photos stored on your computer saved in .jpg or similar formats. Photos can be stored in a photo program under "pictures" or in the documents section. PowerPoint allows you to upload photos by clicking on the picture icon in the Insert tab.

    Graphics

    • In some types of presentations, you may need to show analysis based on the use of graphs, charts, or similar graphics. You can create the graphic in a Word document --- perhaps within your original research --- and that file can be easily uploaded into PowerPoint. If you have the graphic stored in Word, you can upload it by clicking on "Object" in the Insert tab, or you can simply recreate it in PowerPoint by clicking on the appropriate icon in the insert tab, such as "chart" or "smartart."
