Retain copies of transcripts from all post-secondary institutions that you have attended and contact your state's department of education. Ask what the requirements are for applying for an alternative educator license. Most states will require a bachelor's degree with a certain minimum of credit hours in your desired single-subject field.
Inquire about a transcript evaluation process. During this process, you will fill out an application for evaluation form. This completed form along with your transcripts and any fee will be sent in for audit. The department of education will analyze your education and send you a letter detailing any requirements that you may still need to complete in order to qualify.
Evaluate the letter that the department of education sends back to you. This letter will contain information about any additional requirements necessary for you to complete before obtaining a teaching license. These requirements will include either extra credit hours in your subject matter or teaching methods courses required by the state. You will also be required to take the PRAXIS testing series and pass it before obtaining your teaching license. In some cases, applicants may have obtained all the necessary education and the letter will state this.
Complete any credit hours required by the education department. After completing these, you will need to send in new transcripts and have the evaluation process completed again. After this new evaluation, you should receive a letter stating that you are eligible for an alternative educator license in your state.
