How to Make an Appendix in a Research Paper

An appendix provides supplementary information at the end of a research paper or essay. It may contain the full results of a study you carried out for your research, for example. It's sometimes preferable to present data in an appendix if it was too complex or lengthy to include in the main body of your essay. The American Psychological Association style guidelines for writing an appendix generally reflect the rules of other style guides, such as Modern Language Association and Harvard.

Instructions

    • 1

Start a new page for each appendix.

    • 2

Label each appendix with a letter if you have more than one. For example: "Appendix A," "Appendix B," "Appendix C."

    • 3

Center the title, such as "Appendix A," at the top of the page, and leave a line before beginning the main body.

    • 4

Indent each new paragraph by at least five spaces, and write the appendix in the same style you used for the main essay.

    • 5

Place any appendices after the reference pages. Continue page numbering and manuscript page headers in the same way as the rest of the paper.
