How to Incorporate an Appendix in a Research Paper

An optional part of a research paper, the appendix may contain information that is not necessary for a reader's comprehension of the paper. Though they may prove interesting or helpful to the reader, the details provided in an appendix, such as maps, diagrams or extra photographs, are strictly supplementary. If you are going to incorporate an appendix into your research paper, verify that the information you plan to include is not needed in the main body of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Give each item its own appendix. If you have two graphs, a photograph and an explanation of a formula, for example, each should have its own appendix.

    • 2

Label each appendix, such as "Appendix A," "Appendix B," "Appendix C," "Appendix D," without quotations in the order they appear in the paper. If you have only one item, label it "Appendix."

    • 3

Center the appendix label at the top of the page. Drop down two lines to begin the first appendix entry.

    • 4

Write a short introduction to each appendix to explain the purpose of the material, since it is given out of the context of the actual paper.

    • 5

Include a short conclusion at the end of each individual appendix, explaining the implications of the information provided or any relevant clarification you feel is necessary.
