Universities, colleges and other higher education institutions use credit hours as a measure of course work. Semester credit hours are the most common units, and represent approximately how many hours a student is in class each week during a 14 to 17 week semester. Less commonly, some institutions use quarter credit hours as a measure for classes that last less than a full semester, usually about 11 weeks. Other institutions, such as technical schools, use clock or contact hours, awarding students 1 credit for each hour they are present in class. Since classes and schools vary on how they give credits, you might need to do some computations to determine the total semester credit hours you received.

1
Contact your school's registrar and obtain a copy of your academic transcript.
-
2
Convert any quarter hours into semester hours. To do this, add up all the quarter hours on your transcript. Multiply this sum by .66 to determine how many semester hours they equal.
-
-
3
Convert any clock hours into semester hours. If your transcript shows clock hours, add these up and divide this sum by 45.
-
4
Add all the semester credits together. If there are semester credits on the transcript, add these together. Add this sum to all your converted clock hour and/or quarter hour computations to determine your total semester credits received.
