How to Become an LPC in Colorado

To become a Licensed Practicing Counselor, or LPC, in Colorado, you must go through an agency called DORA, which is the Department of Regulatory Agencies. This department regulates counselors and many other professionals also. While some states require you to be fully licensed to practice therapy, in Colorado you only have to register with your local government to pursue a career in professional counseling. You can still get your LPC license but it is not mandatory.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete your graduate degree in LPC to pursue a counseling career. While you can register with the state to be added to the database before you graduate, you cannot start your counseling career without completing your degree.

    • 2

Decide whether you want to become a LPC or an unlicensed psychotherapist. In Colorado, you can practice as an unlicensed psychotherapist if you complete your LPC graduate degree and register, but a licensed counselor gets better pay and recognition.

    • 3

Register with the state to practice therapy in Colorado through the DORA website. Complete instructions are available on that website.

    • 4

Pass the mandatory National Counselor Examination (NCE) test to obtain your counseling license. This exam contains 200 questions that cover all the knowledge base you learned in your masters program.
