How to Become an LPC in Georgia

Licensed professional counselors provide counseling services to individuals, groups and organizations. LPCs counsel people with personal or social problems, students and professionals in various career areas. Becoming an LPC in Georgia requires extensive study and training in the mental health field, plus numerous additional steps.       Complete your master's degree from a university accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

      Join the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia, Inc. Membership is not required, but the organization connects licensed professional counselors and presents their interests to state and national legislators. There is a membership fee.

      Get a licensed professional counselor or licensed associate professional counselor application and fill it out. The application can be obtained from the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family Therapists website, www.sos.state.ga.us/pld/counselors/.

      Pass the National Counselor Examination, which is offered each spring and fall. Got to NBCC.org, National Board for Certified Counselors, to apply for the exam. Put your mouse over the rectangle with "for Counselors". Go to the bottom of the rectangle and click on "apply for the NCC certification." Place your mouse over the tab "EXAMS" and click on The National Counselor Examination, then click on NCE Exam Sites and Dates.

      Send the document proving that you have passed the NCE to the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors.

      Work as a supervised professional counselor under a licensed director to gain experience. You must obtain a W-2 form from your employer as proof of pay. Work at least 600 hours as a professional counselor under supervision.

      Present the proof of work and pay to the Georgia Composite Board of Professional Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage and Family to complete the process.
