Complete all the prerequisite coursework needed to graduate from an accredited teacher education program. The minimal educational level, for a potential teacher, that Massachusetts accepts is a bachelor's degree in education. Depending on the college, the prerequisite coursework will vary.
Pass the tests required by the Massachusetts Tests for the Educator Licensure (MTEL) program. The exams include the Communication and Literacy Skills test and the Academic (K-12) subject matter tests. The Communication and Literacy Skills test has two sections, one of reading and the other of writing. It consists of multiple-choice, short-answer, and two open-response questions. The subject matter tests vary depending on the subjects you have chosen to teach. The subject matter test consists of multiple choice and open response questions. Each test has its own passing score.
Receive your Massachusetts licensure with your current teaching certification from another state. To gain a Massachusetts certification, you must complete three years of teaching in another state and pass the MTEL exams. You may be awarded a one year temporary license if you did not complete the MTEL exams. However, within that year you must complete the exams.
Upgrade your academic credentials. Massachusetts pays teachers some of the highest public school salaries in the country. Competition for jobs and advancement is intense. After you have decided to make teaching your career, you should pursue a master's degree, doctorate or administrative credentials.
