What Is Included on a Cover Page in APA Style?

The vagaries of American Psychological Students leave many students confused. Yet with the cover page, you have the opportunity to let instructors and readers know immediately they're in for a well-organized paper if you pay close attention to formatting procedure. The "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" provides detailed formatting guidelines, and is periodically revised. The APA formatting style of the cover page includes the title, author's name, the author's affiliations, and page number.
  1. Title

    • A title is a concise statement that summarizes the main idea of the research paper. The APA recommends a title of less than 12 words. Avoid using abbreviations in the title. The title appears two times on the cover page. First, the title is in all caps and located in the header of the page. The same title is in title case, centered, and positioned in the upper half of the page.

    Author's Name

    • Following the title in the middle of the cover page, type the author's name. The Author's name is in title case and centered. The APA prefers researchers to put first name, middle initial(s), and last name. All titles and degrees, such as Dr. and Ph.D., are omitted. If there is more than one author and all authors are from the same affiliation, write the author's names in one line. Otherwise, separate the authors based on their affiliations.

    Affiliation

    • After you have typed the author's name, put the corresponding affiliation centered under the author's name on the next line. The affiliation indicates the location or institution where the author conducts the research. Include multiple affiliations if more than one institution contributes a significant amount of support to the project. If the author does not have any affiliation, put the author's city and state of residence.

    Page Number

    • Page number goes in the upper-right corner of the header on each page, including the cover page. That means the page number of the cover page is "1." APA style prefers numbers only for page numbers. Do not put "Page 1."
