Do colleges look at grades or GPA?

Colleges look at both grades and GPA. While GPA provides a single, easily comparable number summarizing academic performance, colleges also examine individual grades to understand a student's strengths and weaknesses in specific subjects. A strong GPA is important, but a pattern of grades – for example, consistently high grades in science courses but lower grades in humanities – can also be revealing and informative to admissions officers.
