How to Apply for a Hope Scholarship & Pell Grant

Paying for college can be a significant challenge for many students. Fortunately, government grants and scholarships help those who have the most financial need. The most common need-based federal assistance is the Pell Grant, which does not need to be repaid and, as of the 2011-12 school year, gives up to $5,550 to students. The HOPE Scholarship, restricted to students in Georgia, formerly covered all college tuition for selected students, but as of the fall of 2011, now covers 90 percent of costs. To receive either award, students must fill out a Free Application for Student Aid form.

Obtain a FAFSA form. This can be done by calling the FAFSA Student Aid Center at (866) 514-8938 and having them mail it to you. Additionally, you may complete the form online at fafsa.com.

Fill out the form carefully and completely. If you have any questions, you can click the "Need Help" button online or call FAFSA's Student Aid Center for support.

Maintain a GPA of at least 3.0. This is not necessary for Pell Grant applicants, but it is a requirement to obtain the HOPE Scholarship. By meeting the GPA requirement, if you are a Georgia resident and submit a FAFSA form, you will automatically be considered for both awards.
