How to Apply for a Pell Grant in Florida

The Pell Grant was established in 1965 to help low-income individuals with a high school diploma further their education. The U.S. Department of Education sponsors the program and, as of the 2010-2011 school year, the maximum amount one can receive is $5,550. If you live in Florida, pay attention to the deadline. Early applicants who receive the Pell Grant may also qualify for the Florida Student Assistance Grant.

Instructions

    • 1

Go online to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) website, to number one, "Before Beginning a FAFSA." This section explains which documents you need to complete the application.

    • 2

Choose a four-digit pin number through the link in the Number 1 box. You will use that pin number to sign digital documents and to retrieve your information online. Also get your school code from the list of participating schools included in a link in this same section.

    • 3

Go to the next column, Number 2, "Filling Out a FAFSA." The questions will populate according to your answers as you fill in the online form. The FAFSA will ask only questions pertaining to your circumstances. Fill out each blank as you go and sign it with your digital signature (pin number). Once you submit the application, it will be processed.

    • 4

Check the status of your application using the pin number you established. Click on Number 3, "FAFSA Follow-Up." Once FAFSA determines your benefit amount, you'll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Print out the SAR for your records and if your Florida college or university doesn't receive it electronically, be sure they have a copy. You'll need this to collect your funds.

Inquire at your school's financial aid office as to how they will disburse your Pell Grant funds. Some Florida schools will cut you a check for the funds; many will have an account set up for you and they will deduct the tuition, fees and books without you ever touching the money.
