The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program offers scholarships to Tuskegee University and the 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions located in seventeen states. Scholarships are available to U.S. citizens pursuing a Bachelor's degree in agriculture, natural resources sciences or food.
The USDA also offers the PPQ William F. Helms Student Scholarship for those interested in studying agriculture or the biological sciences. The Saul T. Wilson Scholarship is available to undergraduate students studying the biomedical sciences and graduate students studying veterinary medicine. State level governments also offer agriculture related scholarships, such as Illinois' Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship Program.
Many universities around the country offer scholarships for agriculture students. For example, Texas State University offers an Agriculture Faculty Memorial Scholarship in memory of deceased and retired faculty members. North Dakota State University College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources offers general scholarships and those designated for a specific course of study such as horticulture or range science.
Other sources of scholarships are foundations and professional organizations. Groups such as the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas sponsor scholarships that promote the study of agriculture. And several organizations that work with cattle provide scholarships for agriculture students. The American Jersey Cattle Association, The Brown Swiss Association, and The Dairy Calf and Heifer Association are just three of these organizations.
Businesses also offer scholarships and related internships that encourage students to focus on an area of study that will benefit the business. For example, Monsanto offers three scholarship opportunities for agriculture students. The Monsanto Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship focuses on providing scholarships to students from farm families. The Dekalb Ag Youth Scholarship is available to students who are pursuing agriculture related degrees, and the Monsanto Roadrunner Scholarship is available to students from farm families who are involved in the FFA.
Businesses with a focus on sustainable agriculture such as Annie's Homegrown also offer scholarships to support future farmers. Some businesses support agriculture related education because they believe the students will become future customers. For example, Farm Credit of Western New York and First Pioneer Farm Credit offer agriculture related scholarships to residents of their service area.
