Created by Congress in 2007, the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grant program provides a number of grants, ranging in value up to $4,000, to students who intend to teach in elementary and secondary schools that serve students from low-income families.
TEACH grants come with a number of eligibility requirements. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), but do not need to demonstrate a certain financial need. Applicants must be legal citizens of the United States and be enrolled in an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate or graduate program in an institution that participates in the TEACH program. Students must be enrolled in courses that are required to begin a career in teaching and must meet academic requirements.
Those who receive TEACH grants must fulfill an obligation to teach for at least four academic years within eight years of completing the program. If applicants fail to meet this requirement, the grant can be revoked and turned into a loan, which must be paid back.
Grants are given to students striving to teach in a high-need field and in a school serving low-income students. More information about these requirements is available by accessing the TEACH fact sheet at http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/attachments/siteresources/4807Teach_FactSheet_v3.pdf or by contacting the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.
The American Association of Physics Teachers offers three Barbara Lotze Scholarships for Future Teachers each year. These scholarships are available to citizens of the United States who are attending schools in the United States and intend to become high school physics teachers.
Students who currently are enrolled in, or intend to enroll in (including high school seniors) physics teacher preparation courses can apply for these scholarships. Each scholarship is worth up to $2,000 and can be renewed for each of four years of education if the eligibility requirements are met each year.
Applicants must fill out the application, provide three professional letters of recommendation, transcripts of all academic work, a letter indicating why the applicant feels he or she should be chosen and proof of citizenship. More information is available on the AAPT website, or by contacting:
